March comes to an end

Well March has felt like a bit of a slow month after the initial excitement of the launch and meeting lots of the movers and shakers in February. Although as the month is drawing to a close it seems like things are beginning to fall into place and I have some pretty exciting events in the pipeline which will be brining lots of different dance and community groups together! I am still working on finalising all of the plans so more information to follow very soon!

Key dates so far are:
I will be teaching the Big Dance routine to St Johns Primary School on 25th April and then to SpinDrift Youth on 27th April. I am hoping to organise two inset days for teacher in the Dartmouth and Kingsbridge area so keep posted for dates!

Big Dance is on 29th April and we will be dancing in Kingsbridge at a venue TBC, with a possibility of a group also dancing in Dartmouth at the same time.

Then we have the world record event on the 18th May, this is a chance to do the Big Dance at wherever you are and be part of a world record attempt!

And on Sunday 20th May the Olympic Torch will be traveling through South Devon and there will be a big dance event at Stoke Fleming, with smaller satellite events in other villages, more details to follow very soon!

It has been great being part of this project and meeting so many new people and finding out about all of the wonderful things happening in the area.

SpinDrift Dance Company
local artists, local creativity

A bit of a update and some news from SpinDrift

Hi everyone,

So I have been a little quiet this month due to illness and doing lots of traveling round the country meeting lots of wonderful dancey people and making some exciting connections!

Mental Health and Long Term Illness
I have just got back from Laban where I met two wonderful ladies from 'Hoot' based in Yorkshire who ran a workshop for dance practitioners who work with participants with mental health issues. The day was inspiring and this is something I would really like to establish in the South Devon area and I'm going to try and get the planning and research done for this by the end of the month, so I will keep you posted on my progress. If anyone has any useful connections especially with GP's or other organisations that you think might be interested in a project like this please do get in touch!

Big Dance
So I have been busy learning this years Big Dance routine choreographed by the wonderful Wayne McGregor and I already have 3 schools signed up for the big schools pledge in the dartmouth and Kingsbridge area and I'm working on the rest! So if you are a school in the South Devon area and you want to get involved in Big Dance please sign up for the big schools pledge and get in touch, I'm more than happy to help! I am also working with Stoke Flemming and lots of dance groups including SpinDrift Youth and Dartmouth School of Dance to put together an exciting dance event on the 20th May! More info to follow soon.

SpinDrift
For those of you who don't know about SpinDrift that are a local professional dance company who also do a lot of fantastic work in the community and in schools. They are currently looking for a choreographer to work with them to make a new work to add to their ever expanding rep! They also run a youth dance company at Kingsbridge school on a Friday night. Please see my other posts for more detailed information about both of these exciting opportunities!

Well thats all for now folks but please do forward me information about any dance activity or events in South Devon so i can get the information out. And lets make Big Dance a great one this year so please sign up to the Big Schools Pledge if you are a school!!

Introduction :)

So I have just sent this message round to some key people but I also wanted to post it up on here just incase  :)

My name is Claire Summers and I am the South Devon Dance Ambassador for Dance in Devon's Compass project. I will be working to help raise the profile and provision of dance in South Devon over the next year. This could mean setting up new projects, supporting existing projects or just letting people know what is out there in their area!

There are a few key areas I am interested in:

  • Working with Schools and teachers to help support their current dance program or indeed help start up dance if there is none.
  • Work with the young people of Dartmouth to set up a youth dance group.
  • Find out what dance is already available so I can make this information more accessible to the public.
  • Taking dance to already established groups such as young carers, retirement and care homes and another community group that would like some dance!
  • To mentor potential dance leaders/ teachers and help them to establish new groups in the area that are sustainable.
  • to spread the word about Mini Movers and get the children's centres dancing.
This list is by no means exhausted, and if you have any ideas of potential projects please let me know!

I would really like you help so please get in touch if;

  • if you are a school, group or any other organisation and are interested in the project and you would like some more information, or if you would like me to come in and talk to you more about the project.
  • If you run a group and you would like to tell me about it please do so making sure to include details of time and venue.
  • If you have any ideas about other projects or know of a group that would love to do some dance.

I do have a small budget to run taster session so agin if this would be of interest to you please let me know.

It would be really great if you could also pass this email on to anyone who you think it may be of interest to, so please spread the word!

I have also attached some information about Big Dance which could be a great starting point.

For more information about the compass project please visit http://www.danceindevon.org.uk/projects/

Best Wishes

Freddie's residency in Dartington 16th feb 2012

South Devon Dance Launch 15th Feb 2012

February

So February has been and gone and March is fully underway, and it has been quite an exciting month for South Devon Dance!

We officially launched on the 15th March with a day of dance kindly hosted at Townstall community hall. Many turned up to show their support and took part in the free dance classes going on throughout the day. We were really lucky to have Erik from Urbanation Dance School come to teach some street and Break Dance then Emma Mannings lead the group through some energetic African dance. Sarah Farrow-Jones who teaches a adult stretch class in Blackawton Village hall every friday morning came along to take the next session before Sarah Buckingham finished off the day with a dance fit class!

Then strait from the Launch day I headed over to Dartington to get a sneak peek at Freddie Opoku-Addaie's new work! Freddie will be creating and performing a Bespoke piece in South Devon later this year which is very exciting!! Then I was lucky enough to get to spend all of the next day along with the other dance ambassadors working in the studio with Freddie and his dancers :). It was great to get to know him better and his work and I'm very excited about the next few months leading up to his residency in South Devon.

Other than that I have been very busy meeting with lots of different people and making lots of connections in the community, really trying to map out what fantastic work is already happening out there and how I can help to support that.

A few key things that have happened this month and that I will be working on throughout March are getting ready for Big Dance and World Dance Day...so keep you eyes and ears peeled for more information coming very soon! I'm also hopping to work with Townstall youth group to set up a collaborative dance and music project (and hopefully get the TR14rs to come and visit them!).

Oh and I must not forget a huge well done to Suzie West and the dancers of Kingsbridge School for a great show last Friday night! It was fantastic to see so many wonderful dancers and I hope I get to work with more of you over the next 10 months.

ps I have attached a few pictures from the launch and freddie's residency at Dartmouth, hope yo like them :)
